Dear Parents,
God doesn’t always take away sad times. All kids have experienced sadness. Although this point may sound discouraging, it is an encouragement for kids. Help them see that even when sad times don’t go away, God is with us in the midst of them. And like Job, we can stand strong in our faith during sad times

Lesson – Job: God's Plan for Job
Introduction
Today we’re going to learn that God doesn’t always take away sad times. We’ll discover a guy in the Bible named Job (JOBE) who had really sad times, but he still praised God! Sometimes we’re sad, but sometimes we’re happy!
Dig Into the Bible Lesson
In This Passage: Job is a righteous man, but Satan thinks that’s only because he’s happy and wealthy. God allows Satan to take away Job’s wealth and family. Job is very sad for a long time. God doesn’t always take away sad times, but after a while he gives back everything Job lost, plus more.
Bible Point: God doesn’t always take away sad times.
Memory Verse: “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).
Bible Lesson: Open a Bible to Job 1. If we could choose, we’d have only happy things happen to us. But that’s not the way it works. We have sad times, and God doesn’t always take away sad times—at least not as quickly as we’d like. But God gives us the Bible to comfort us in sad times. The Bible is God’s special book. God is always with us in sad times, and he wants to talk to us now.
In today’s true Bible story, Job’s life got really, really sad. And God doesn’t always take away sad times like Job’s. Let’s see what happened to Job.
Job had a good life. He was rich and comfortable, with a great family.
Listen to everything Job had. Read Job 1:2-3.
Then something happened. Read Job 1:9-12.
So Satan started to take away Job’s stuff. Let’s see what he took away. Read Job 1:13-17.
Job even lost his house and most of his family! Have kids scatter so they’re sitting alone.
What would you do or say if all this happened to you?
Let’s see how Job reacted. Read Job 1:20-22.
We just lost all of our comforts and had to leave our friends. Let’s praise God anyway, just as we did when we had all that good stuff.
Well, things got even worse for Job. Read Job 2:4-7.
Boils are really uncomfortable bumps on your skin. Job would’ve been itchy and in pain. And on top of that, his wife was telling him to curse God! Job still had some friends. At first they cried with him…but then they tried to tell him his troubles were all his fault. They thought Job must’ve done something really horrible, and God was punishing him. But that’s not why so many bad things were happening to Job! And he had a lot of bad things happen.
What do you think is the worst thing that happened to Job? Why?
If this happened to you, what questions would you want to ask God?
Job didn’t know why he was going through so many sad things. But the hard times seemed to be sticking around. God doesn’t always take away sad times, and Job was sad about everything he’d lost.
Let’s hear some questions he had for God. Read Job 13:23-24.
Job asked God questions. He wanted to know why he had sad times and why God doesn’t always take away sad times. But he never sinned in what he said to God.
God wanted Job to know that God is in charge. Even though God doesn’t always take away sad times, he always has a good plan. He knows what he’s doing! God spoke back to Job. He talked about all the things he made and how he controls the weather. Let’s hear some of the things he said.
Read Job 38:12, 22, and 34.
God also talked about one animal the Bible calls a behemoth. We don’t know if a behemoth is an animal that’s now extinct or if it’s another name for an animal we have today. I’m going to read what God said about the behemoth. As I read, draw what you think it looked like based on what the Bible says.
Slowly read Job 40:15-24.
How would knowing that God made a creature like this help you to trust him?
God doesn’t always take away sad times. But he’s always God. He’s always a big God who’s bigger than the behemoth and bigger than our sadness. He’s always worthy of our praise.
Even though God doesn’t always take away sad times, God did eventually make Job feel better. It seems like it took a long time, but listen to this.
Read Job 42:10 – 13
Tell about a sad time you faced that God ultimately made better.
Tell about a sad time you faced that you’re still sad about.
Even though Job’s original sadness was taken away, God doesn’t always take away sad times in our lives. But we do know that one day, when we believe in Jesus, we’ll go to heaven and we’ll never be sad again. Even if you have a sad thing happen that you’re sad about your whole life, you can trust that one day, God will end your sadness in heaven.
When we’re sad, sometimes we cry and need tissues. Let’s write prayers to God on tissues about what makes us sad.
How did you feel when you tried to write on the tissue?
Sometimes it can be hard to express our feelings when we’re sad. But we can still talk to God about how we feel, even if we don’t think we have the right words. God knows when we’re sad, and he wants to be with us and bring us comfort, even when he doesn’t take away sad times.
Let’s lift up our tissues to God as a prayer. Thank God for what you wrote. That may seem odd, but you can thank God for being with you or for blessings that may have come out of your sad times.
Pray: Dear God, we know you don’t always take away sad times. But thank you that you’re with us through them and that you know what it’s like to be sad. Please bring us peace and comfort in our sad times. In Jesus’ name, amen
Discuss and Watch Kyle’s Story
A lot of times, when we get sick, God helps us get healthy again. If you have a cold, you’ll get better. But there are some kinds of sick that don’t go away. Let’s meet Kyle and see what happened when he got sick.
What sounds like the hardest part of having diabetes?
Kyle’s mom said, “God is going to use you for something great and for something bigger.” What do you think God could use Kyle to do because he has diabetes?
God doesn’t always take away sad times. Kyle will probably always have diabetes. But God helped him find a way to manage his insulin, and he’s seen God at work in his life. Sometimes, sad times can help us grow closer to God. And no matter what happens, we can be sure that God will never stop loving us.
